Under the direction of Julie Sanchez, the Knightsbridge Theatre breathes new life into what many call Oscar Wilde’s greatest comedy, “The Importance of Being Earnest.” The plot focuses on a well-respected man of the English countryside, who invents a demanding brother named Ernest in order to occasionally escape to London and shirk his responsibilities. Ernest is the character Jack adopts as his own when in London, and earnest are his actions when deceiving two different sets of friends and family. It is only when he becomes interested in marriage that his real identity comes into question. Conventional Victorian ideals unravel before the audience’s eyes in a play about upper-crust figures so concerned with appearing moral that they are willing to commit immoral acts just to do so. Incessant wordplay and double meanings propel the dialogue throughout the show, turning hypocrisy into hilarity and revealing Wilde’s true perception of Victorian society: pomposity to such a great extent that it can lead to utter downfall.
