We celebrate transportation research by exploring the transportation innovations of the 20th century: highways and bridges, autos and trucks, and air transport. Hear about how engineers, government agencies and private industry designed and built the public infrastructure that restructured economic activity and facilitated the emergence of today's metropolitan regions. David billington is gordon y.s.wu professor in the department of civil and environmental engineering, princeton university. He is a member of the national academy of engineering, a fellow of the american academy of arts and sciences, and the winner of numerous research and teaching awards. His most recent books include power, speed and form: engineers and the making of the twentieth century, and big dams of the new deal era: a confluence of engineering and politics.
