Enemies of Happiness

In 2003, Malalai Joya is expelled from a constitutional meeting in Afghanistan after denouncing corrupt warlords in the assembly. Two years later, 28-year-old Joya campaigns for election to Afghanistan's National Assembly, the country's first election in 35 years and the first in which women are allowed to vote. An activist who successfully draws attention toward the oppression of women, Joya faces death threats and violent opposition during her campaign.
