Gong Li

Began to receive international acclaim after several collaborations with "Fifth Generation" Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, including Red Sorghum, her 1987 debut, Ju Dou (1990) and Raise the Red Lantern (1991). Her Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern and Farewell, My Concubine were all nominated for Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. English-speaking debut was 1998's Chinese Box . Is the subject of Kam Kwok-Leung's documentary The Rising Star: Gong Li . Her Farewell, My Concubine… Show more shared the Palme D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Best Picture in 1993 with The Piano .  In 2006, was voted China's "most beautiful person" in a newspaper poll. In 2008, became a citizen of Singpore, the native country of her then-husband, Ooi Hoe Seong. The decision was slammed in China, where some branded her a "traitor." ~ Rovi
